Who We Are
50 Years of Standing Strong With Sickle Cell Warriors
Since 1974, the L.D. Barksdale Sickle Cell Foundation has been a trusted source of hope, education, and support for individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease across South Carolina. We are committed to improving lives through compassionate care, community outreach, health education, patient advocacy, and access to essential resources.
Serving communities throughout the Upstate and Midlands, we work alongside healthcare providers, community partners, and dedicated volunteers to raise awareness, promote early intervention, and empower those living with sickle cell disease. Our mission is to ensure that every individual and family receives the support, guidance, and opportunities they need to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Our Mission
To improve the quality of healthcare and the quality of life for individuals and families impacted by sickle cell disease through education, direct support and compassionate community partnerships.

Our Vision
A world where every person living with sickle cell has access to informed care, meaningful support and equitable resources — regardless of background, income or location.
Our Values
Our Reach
We proudly serve 15 counties in the Upstate and Midlands of South Carolina through free screenings, educational programs, outreach events and direct patient support.
Every day, we show up to make sure Sickle Cell Warriors feel seen, supported and empowered. It’s powerful to be part of a team that doesn’t just raise awareness but actually builds real pathways to care, connection and community. The work we do is personal — and that’s what makes it meaningful.”
